SHILLONG: Following pressure from several quarters including JSU, the State Government has decided to speed up the process of opening of a blood bank at Jowai Civil Hospital.

The JSU has threatened to hold a two-day night road blockade protesting delay in opening a blood bank.

Official sources on Tuesday informed that senior medical officer, who is attached to the Regional Blood Bank in Shillong, has assumed charge of the blood bank.

“The senior medical officer is now overseeing the final preparations to make the blood bank functional. We have also already appointed Lab technicians, attendants and even counselors for the blood bank,” official sources said.

The government is waiting for a formal nod from the Centre in this regard, sources said adding “We are expecting to get the approval within the next few days”.

Meanwhile, JSU president Rikut Parein informed that the organisation was yet to receive any official communiqué from the State Government in this regard. The JSU, however, decided to suspend its agitation till August 15.
