SHILLONG: Traffic jams in Shillong city is a source of utter mayhem for the commuters on an everyday basis and people’s attitude of not following the law further aggravates the problem.
Additional SP (Traffic) NK Syiem recently told reporters that people on many occasions don’t follow the rules and this leads to traffic congestion. “We put sign boards about traffic rules but as soon as we shift, people refrain from respecting the rules and this is one of the factors that lead to traffic jams,” he told reporters.
While traffic volume is only increasing in Shillong, Shillong Traffic police (STP) on the other hand is suffering from acute shortage of manpower and the department is bound to take the help of home guards.
The ASP also opines that the traffic congestion in the city has reduced after the opening of the Shillong Bypass.
In its attempt to make the roads of Shillong safe for driving, STP is also conducting alcohol checks on commuters.
