NONGSTOIN: The two day festival “Amjong” concluded on Thursday at Christ King Hall, Mission Mawshynrut West Khasi Hills District. The festival was organized by the District Arts and Cultural Society with the help of the Block Development Officer Mawshynrut.

The two day festival was marked by performances and display of the rich traditional and cultural heritage of the Lyngngam Nongtrai.

Performing at the gala event were students from various schools of the district besides villagers from different ethnic villages in the area.

Shad Tynrai, a unique dance of the Khasis was presented by the villagers of Pyndengmawleh. Legendary singer Rana Kharkongor also lent his voice at the occasion that left the audiences spell bound.

Another unique dance, Shadksingkhynrum, which is performed at funerals in Mawshynrut area was also a highlight of the occasion. Lynniang, another Khasi dance was performed which was led by Jesro Mawsor.

Other events included showcasing and displaying indigenous and fashion sequence by different schools of the area.

Attending the function as the Chief Guest local MDC F K Ryntathiang congratulated the BDO M B Tongper for the grand success of the festival.

He added that Meghalaya with three communities- Khasi, Jaintia and Garo had a myriad of traditional songs, dances and customs that needed to be preserved. He highlighted that with a such shows, cultural heritages can be preserved and cherished.

Ryntathiang also thanked Tongper for organizing this festival as it had helped in bringing unity among the Lyngams and the Nongtrais of the district.

He also urged the people of the area to lend their co-operation to the BDO for organizing such traditional programmes in the future.
