TURA: Two men who were allegedly extorting money in the name of militant groups were lynched by an angry mob at Mangsang in East Garo Hills district bordering West Khasi Hills on Thursday morning.

The victims, Akil D Sangma (27) of Mangsang Asimagal and Luckyston Ch Momin (28) of Nongbakrengkil were caught by the villagers after they had reportedly demanded money in the name of militants. They were beaten to death by the mob and their bodies were later retrieved by police from a jungle.

This is one among recent cases involving villagers who have meted out street justice on criminals in the Garo Hills. A few weeks ago, two suspected militants who had tried to extort money from a church elder were beaten to death in Bajengdoba region of North Garo Hills district.
