SHILLONG: Panic gripped the city on Tuesday evening after residents of Laitumkhrah witnessed a huge number of police personnel conducting safety drills and executing checks at Don Bosco Junction.

However, the panic later turned out to be a mock drill conducted by State police to see the response of police force to any eventuality such as bomb blasts, extremist attacks and disasters of the like.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang later said that the mock drill was conducted to see whether officers and police personnel were equipped to counter such incidents especially in view of the past incident when suspected HNLC gunmen attacked Lumdiengjri police station last year. “Public should not panic but should cooperate with police in such kinds of incidents,” the SP said.

The incident sent the residents in a tizzy with rumours floating and calls flooding concerning the drill.
