Editor,
CM Jha should be asked to wind up his fake institution and be told to refund the money taken from PhD applicants and admission and sessions fees. But he should also be made to compensate students for mental torture, the years lost, financial loss etc caused to students. Then the people and not only the students can really go after the powers that be who made this mess happen. Last time the CID was entrusted with the task of pursuing meticulously the CM Jha University case. But the Department has come under the scanner for its shoddy approach on the matter. It is shameful that Meghalaya has no Standing Counsel in the Supreme Court when it was crystal clear that Jha would approach the Supreme Court for relief. This means that the State Law Department is not taking its responsibilities seriously. Now the new Governor of Meghalaya, Dr KK Paul is worried at the lackadaisical maner in which the CMJ case is handled and the fact that the Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to the University’s Chancellor, CM Jha.
The CID should have sought the opinion of the Law department to file a caveat to prevent any one sided judgment of the Supreme Court on the CMJU matter. Jha seems to be much wiser and more resourceful than the entire government machinery in Meghalaya.
Jha has taken away crores of rupees from our state and all over country. The only way to resolve this crisis is to recover all the money from Jha and shut down the University. If Meghalaya does not dare to do so it will become the laughing stock of the country.

No empathy for fellow human beings
Editor,
I am a Roman Catholic but first of all a human being. Three days ago I was dropping off a friend at his place on my motorcycle. At around 9.30 pm while on our way to the friend’s place we saw a Maruti car that had met with an accident and was horribly smashed in front of Brookeside school (Fire Brigade). It was horrible scene. After dropping my friend, I was on my way home when a Bolero with the registration number ML 05 E 1007 speeded past me. It was very dark and the Traffic Police had retired for the day. When I reached Malki traffic junction the same car tried over taking another motorcycle in front of me. The biker drove at his own pace. The Bolero speeded past that motorcycle too. What happened next was shocking. The poor biker got hit by the Bolero while the pillion jumped from the bike to save his own life while the Bolero escaped. The bike rider stopped to take care of his friend but I insisted that he chase the Bolero. I too joined the chase. We finally caught up with the Bolero but when the driver came out of the car in front of Loreto Convent, two priests also came out of the vehicle. I cannot express my shock and consternation and decided to write this letter. It reminded me of a Bible verse, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forgets his own soul.” Is this what the priests were following?

Increase parking space in Shillong
Editor,
I refer to the D.M Pariat’s letter (ST Aug 2, 13) captioned ‘snarls for parking space’. Few in Shillong realize that this once beautiful city is the only hill station in India where we can go from house to house (almost) by car. Not for long however! In view of the massive shortage of parking space and the exponential growth of traffic in Shillong , the SP traffic should definitely permit one side parking at specified spaces on “one way streets” without disturbing the natural flow of traffic. This however is just a short term measure and akin to ‘closing the stable door after the horse has bolted’.
The multi level municipal parking at Khyndailad, in addition to being a money spinner and source of employment for MUDA particularly at a time they are having problems paying staff salaries!) is a very effective parking facility. Try to imagine Police Bazar without it! Why not replicate this at 10-15 other locations around Shillong where land may still be available. Let the private sector undertake the building and management of the parking lot at rates, terms and conditions laid down and regulated by MUDA. Do this before it is too late and land is no longer available.
