SHILLONG: The recruitment procedure to the Armed Branch and Unarmed Branch of the Meghalaya Police has drawn widespread condemnation from eligible candidates who were denied a chance to appear for the personal interview despite having cleared the written test.

Questioning the ‘shady’ recruitment process conducted by the Meghalaya Police, the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) along with parents of eligible candidates and many candidates from Jaintia Hills have served a 24-hour deadline to the State Government to clarify on the issue while demanding postponement of the personal interview scheduled on August 12.

The eligible candidates questioned why their names did not flash in the list of selected candidates to appear for the personal interview despite the fact that these candidates were declared to have cleared the written examination and physical tests.

“When we questioned the authorities, the reply we got was that we had failed to attain the cut off percentage which was never mentioned anywhere when we first applied for the post,” a female candidate, Ruby M Shadap, said, adding that she has lost all faith in the State Government.

M Dhar, father of an eligible candidate from Nangbah village, said that if the candidates were not fit to appear for the personal interview then the Police Department should not have listed them as eligible candidates in the first place.

He said that the procedure of selecting the candidate for the personal interview based on percentage wise marks should have been made public at the beginning rather than leaving things to assumptions and pouring cold water on the expectation of those candidates who managed to clear the written test.

Expressing anguish over the sudden change in the trend of selection of the candidates, a mother of a candidate, Nishwa Dkhar, said, “We cannot allow this to happen. We will stand up for our right and fight for justice.”

Lambasting Home Minister Roshan Warjri for refusing to talk on the issue, HNYF publicity secretary Donbok Dhar said, “We condemn the Home Minister for not considering the aspirations of thousands of youth.”

He said that the government should come up with the correct answers failing of which they will be forced to launch a non-cooperation movement.
