SHILLONG: The Union Government has stopped procuring levy sugar following which it is not available under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

This was informed by PW Ingty, Principal Secretary, Food and Civil Supplies etc., here on Wednesday.

“The Union Government has rather asked all the state governments to procure sugar on their own and the Centre will subsidize a certain percentage of the same,” he said.

When asked about the percentage of subsidy, Ingty said that it is not percentage exactly but there are certain slabs. “For every kilogram of sugar, the Union Government will subsidize Rs 18.50 as against the maximum retail price of Rs 40,” he said.

To a query, the Principal Secretary further informed that the State Government is in the process of procuring sugar and it will be soon made available to the customers under PDS.

It may be mentioned that the Tripura government, despite the Union Government decision on procurement of sugar, is continuing to supply the item under the PDS.
