SHILLONG: As the demand for a separate Garoland gains momentum, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Saturday ruled out division of the State.

Addressing a press conference, which was also attended by the AICC General Secretary (in-charge Meghalaya) Luizinho Faleiro, he said “This demand has been there for a long time and I think people of the state are fortunate to belong to a beautiful state like Meghalaya.”

De Sangma’s remark assumes significance as the demand for a separate Garoland is gaining momentum in Garo Hills as various NGOs have come together demanding a separate state after the creation of Telangana by the Centre.

On the other hand, Faleiro defended the decision to create Telangana. He said that the demand for creation of Telangana had been there since 1956 and the decision was arrived at after consultations.
