SHILLONG: After the recent bungle in the mid day meal scheme at Bihar, the district administration of East Khasi Hills is leaving no stone unturned to provide the best quality food grains to students under the scheme.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal on Monday informed reporters that the district administration has prioritized to ensure quality food grains for the students.

He informed that the district administration has appointed as many as 2028 cooks and helpers to assist the schools in preparing food under sanitized conditions.

In the backdrop of the tragedy in Bihar whereby 22 children lost their lives after consuming poisonous food under the mid day meal scheme, the statement made by the Deputy Commissioner holds great significance.

According to Goyal, school managing committees need to be vigilant at the time of cooking of meals to ascertain that quality food is provided to students. “No complaint has been received as yet regarding the quality of food,” Goyal said.

He also pointed out that the district administration had been conducting surprise checks in various schools through the district magistrates and directions are issued from time to time to schools.

The official stated that food availability was not an issue as the Government has employed a lifting in-charge who procures the food grains from the Food Corporation of India after a thorough sample checking.

While asking people to lodge a complaint if the quality of food was found to be compromised, he also informed that the food grains have been supplied under the scheme till the month of June this year.

It may be mentioned that 100 gram of food is the stipulated quantity for a student of lower primary school while 150 gram is supplied to that of an upper primary school per day under the scheme.
