SHILLONG: With an aim to urge the government to take immediate steps to save the CMJ University, the students, both past and current, have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma urging his intervention to resume normalcy in the University’s functioning.
Stating that the whole mess should have been cleaned up by the Governor as Visitor to the University, the students questioned his silence for the past three years, while alleging that the Governor himself was, to some extent, responsible for the whole crisis. As Visitor of the University, the Governor should have used the same vigour, vitality and enthusiasm to clean up the system three years back, the students stated.
The students highlighted the fact that the University had been running for more than three years and many students had gone through various degree courses and questioned whether it would be appropriate to close it down merely because of a few controversies and misappropriations on the part of the University authorities.
They further questioned why other departments and branches of the University were being unnecessarily dragged into the controversy when the main issue is related to the Ph.D and M.Phil. branches.
The memorandum also stated that the mode of inquiry and investigation should have been restricted to the guilty and not affected innocent students who obtained their degrees by sheer hard work and dedication and questioned the comments and recommendations made by the Governor to derecognize the diplomas and degrees of hundreds of students who are in no way connected or involved in the whole issue.
Stating that so many stake holders are being dragged into the controversy unnecessarily the aggrieved students have appealed to the Chief Minister to appoint a new Vice Chancellor in the interest of the students and the State and that all the degrees and diplomas of the students should not be derecognized as suggested by the Governor except for questionable ones.
The students also demanded that the results of various academic courses like BA, MA, B.Ed, MSW etc., be declared at the earliest and that the Chief Minister must intervene so that new office bearers of the University can be appointed within a stipulated time frame.
The students have also appealed to the Government of Meghalaya to declare the admission results immediately without any delay and to resume the University’s classes.
Meanwhile, the students have rejected the offer of reimbursement suggested by the Governor saying that it was impossible and sheer waste of time to study for the same degrees and diplomas over and over again.
