NONGSTOIN: Members of four NGOs – HANM, HPSO, WPM and WYWC of West Khasi Hills on Tuesday intervened into the ‘peaceful’ agitation in the form of a hunger strike called by the Association of DSC Passed 2010, and have announced a two-night road blockade in support of the hunger strikers who have set up camp outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Nongstoin, since Monday.

Informing of the road blockade, Arphul Kharbani, president of HANM, West Khasi Hills District, said the blockade would be effective throughout West Khasi Hills on Thursday (from 7 pm to 5 am on Friday) and again from 7 pm on Friday till 5 am on Saturday.

Kharbani also warned of strict action against anyone violating the blockade.

Meanwhile, the indefinite hunger strike called by the Association of West Khasi Hills DSC Passed 2010, entered its second day on Tuesday.

A doctor from the Nongstoin Civil Hospital monitored the health of the agitators and informed that the conditions of the two pregnant women, who are participating in the hunger strike, have reached a critical stage.

Extending solidarity towards the hunger strikers the TUR (Thma U Rangli Juki) expressed concern that the problems of the DSC passed candidates of West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills and Garo Hills districts have been draggin on.

The organisation also appealed to the government to do away with all non-transparent employment and illegal favouritism and backdoor appointments done by those in power.

TUR urged the Government to stop perpetuating systemic discrimination of the youth by denial of their justified and hard earned right to gainful employment.
