SHILLONG: Internal dissensions are part and parcel of Congress culture. Recently there were reported rumblings in the Congress-led MUA Government aimed at dislodging Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma. But Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Deborah Marak has termed the development as a ploy to drive a wedge among three strong leaders of Garo Hills.
Deborah Marak who is also the Social Welfare minister said on Wednesday, “It looks like they are trying to divide us by creating an unwanted situation. “
The three Congress stalwarts Deborah is obviously referring to are Dr Sangma, former chief minister Salseng Marak and herself.
The Minister also revealed that a few disgruntled MLAs had approached her to rebel against the Chief Minister.
“As the working president I am answerable to the AICC to ensure the stability of the Government,” she said while issuing a strong warning that the party would not tolerate anyone who tries to create unrest in the Government.
The Minister alluded to the ongoing rumblings in the Government as being a game played by the Opposition.
When asked about speculations that she herself is being projected as the candidate for the Chief Minister’s post, Marak said, “I have never dreamt of becoming a Chief Minister.”
According to her, it is not easy for the so-called rebels to topple this Government and she has asked them to concentrate on the development of their constituency as people have great expectations from this Government.
She also said that if the MLAs have any grievances, they should bring the matter before the MPCC and it would be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister so that matters are resolved amicably.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Minister Zenith Sangma who is also the brother of the Chief Minister also took a dig at the MLAs who are once again up to their dirty tricks of trying to topple a stable Government.
“An idle mind is a devil’s workshop and people who don’t know how to use their time tend to indulge in this sort of mischief, ” he said here on Wednesday.
He even urged the faction of legislators to concentrate on the development of the State rather than waste their time in unproductive speculation.
