SHILLONG: One Mildred Nongrum, who was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the August 16 incident at Smit in which three people were hacked to death by an angry mob for allegedly practising witchcraft, is a government employee.

According to police, Nongrum (40) is a Lower Division Assistant (LDA) in the office of the Inspectorate of Electricity.

Nongrum is one of the 6 women arrested on Tuesday in connection to this case.

All the arrested are relatives of the three people – Yesley Mawthoh, Besley Mawthoh and Enstarsing Nongdhar – who were killed on Friday last by a mob after being accused of practising witchcraft on one Lam Nongrum (24). Nongrum along with the 11 accused have been remanded to 7-day police custody.
