SHILLONG: It is over a year now since the municipal guard wall (reinforcement wall made of stone boulders) at Lum Kartic Lane in Harisabha, Laban, collapsed following a landslide. But an unmoved and careless Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) is still found wanting on its part to repair the wall that lies on the lane that connects the busy Laban Last Stop (via ABP Road) with Harisabha and ultimately the Laban Main Road.

The condition of this lane has further deteriorated due to the ongoing downpour as eroding earth coupled with the stone boulders is sliding down on a daily basis.

A resident of this area complained that over a year has rolled by but there has not been any move by the SMB or the civic authorities to repair this lane.

“It is used by school children, elderly residents and others throughout the day since it serves as a shortcut and needs urgent repair,” he said.

A local resident, SK Deb, whose house is located adjacent to this lane, had written a letter dated August 2, 2012 in which he had apprised the Chief Executive Officer of the SMB of the difficulties faced by his family as a result of the debris lying on his premises. However, the complaint letter failed to evoke any response from the Municipal Board.

Sashi Bhushan Chakraborty, a resident of Harisabha, lamented that the condition of the lane is deteriorating each day and urged the local legislator for his immediate intervention in the matter.

Surprisingly, when the matter was taken up with the SMB, the officials sought to downplay the issue saying that fund crunch was preventing them from initiating repair works.
