Burglar commits suicide

 UMIAM: In a bizarre incident, a youth committed suicide after he was caught committing burglary at a MeECL quarter in Umiam on Friday.

According to police, the identified youth, aged around 30 years, entered a MeECL quarter belonging to a staff recently transferred to the area and yet to shift all his belongings. Hearing the commotion, the neighbours rushed to the spot only to be intimidated by the youth who threatened to burst the LPG cylinder if they tried to enter the quarter. He also burnt some substance made of rubber and placed it near the cylinder.

The miscreant then locked the door while the neighbours called for the police who immediately rushed to the spot.

Police broke down the door of the quarter and found that the miscreant had committed suicide in by hanging himself in the toilet. “We also saw blood oozing out of his throat. Probably he attempted to slit his throat but due to extreme pain, chose to hang himself later,” police sources said.

Police said that according to some local people the miscreant hailed from Upper Shillong area and was in Umiam for the past two months. His cadaver was shifted to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for post mortem.
