SHILLONG: City-based Jharokha Art Institution (JAI) will organize the first-ever ‘Face and Body Art Festival’ in the form of a street show at Khyndailad on Saturday evening.

Around 22 budding artists of JAI between the age group of 6 to 40 years will participate in a live body painting on the day.

The themes of the face and body art will comprise different social issues like female foeticide, tiger poaching, water and environment conservation, terrorism and corruption, Uttarakhand natural disaster etc.

The event has been conceptualized by city-based painter Jaya Kalra.

“The purpose of this street show is to bring awareness of this form of art medium, which is popular in the West but only practiced on stage in India or in the form of tattoos.

However, if popularized, this can become a part of any occasion, parties, festivals or even national celebrations. We also want to make people realize that art is not just a serious business but can be fun, too,” she said.

These body paints are currently not available in India and have been imported from USA and is certified under strict FDA standards of the USA for the safety of the participants.

The festival will showcase encouraging art forms like dancing and singing by local artists, ramp walks depicting the themes or messages on the face, body and attire to entertain, educate and enthrall the crowd.

At the same time, the crowd would be treated to colourful and lively joker, a twinkling night view of the stars in our constellation, beautiful flowers, gardens and butterflies, the terrible dragon, the pirates of the Caribbean, the famous Nohkalikai Falls in Meghalaya, a cute Dalmatian and a Cowboy from the Wild West, amongst others.
