SHILLONG: Violent incidents marked the pro-ILP group sponsored night road blockade which began at 9 pm on Wednesday.

According to police, some KSU activists assaulted a chicken shop owner identified as Babuh Phawa at Polo Bazar at around 9.30 pm and also attempted to close his shop.

Police picked up a 16-year-old boy, hailing from Mawlai Nongmali, in this connection, while others fled away.

Police also said that some KSU volunteers laid boulders on the road in front of Catholic Church at Mawkhar on Wednesday night and while police were removing them , the volunteers pelted stones on them.

However, after a chase one Serababel Swett (25) hailing from Jaiaw Laitdom was arrested from Riatsamthiah, while others managed to escape.

Earlier, unknown miscreants threw a petrol bomb at the residence of one Bhim Bahadur Chettri at Laban at around 3pm here on Wednesday.

According to police, no damage was done to human’s life or property. No one has been arrested in this regard.

Meanwhile, following a case where one non-tribal was assaulted by unknown miscreants at Madanriting on September 2, police said that they were looking for links into this case to trace out whether this was in any way connected to the recent uprising.

One Shyam Sunder Bawri had lodged a complaint at Madanriting police station that on Monday at around 9 pm, unidentified miscreants accosted his son at Madanriting and threatened his family members and also asked him to leave the locality.

Additional forces: Meanwhile, to control the law and order situation in view of the three-day night road blockade, government has decided to deploy additional security forces in and around the city.

“We will be bringing additional forces to ensure law and order,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said here on Wednesday.

He also said that to provide security to night-run buses from the state to other parts of the North East, escort would be arranged from one district to another.

The night road blockade in the state will affect the three north eastern states-Assam, Tripura and Mizoram as many night running buses and commercial vehicles including trucks pass through Shillong.

Earlier, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said that the state government was trying its best to prevent any untoward incident from happening during the night road blockade called by the 10 pro-ILP NGOs.

Stating that tight security had been put into place, Warjri said all the mechanisms required to ensure law and order in place were being considered.

When asked about the safety and security of the passengers travelling in night buses from Shillong to the neighbouring states and vice-versa, the Home minister said the government was considering all safety measures to ensure that the passengers did not face any harassment.

Warjri has also criticised the criminal activities perpetrated by the members of the different pressure group in the last few days.

Meanwhile, DGP PJP Haneman while expressing concern over the recent turn of events, has called upon the local Dorbar Shnong to cooperate with police to ensure that no untoward incident takes places in the state during the night road blockade.
