SHILLONG: The district administration has made elaborate arrangements to maintain law and order in the city in view of the one-day office picketing called by NGOs on Saturday in protest against the non-implementation of the ILP in the State.

The State Government had declared Saturday as a working day since most government employees did not attend office on Monday on account of the bandh called by ten NGOs, despite stringent warning from the Government.

Besides government offices, the revenue and magisterial courts would also function normally on Saturday.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal warned that any attempt to break law and order would be dealt with severely.

“We will take action against anyone who would obstruct office-goers,” Goyal said.

The district administration has already promulgated Section 144 CrPC throughout the district to prevent any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, with many government staff availing a restricted holiday on Saturday, the Government’s directive to the staff to attend to their duties despite the office picketing call is unlikely to have any desired result.

Saturday is a restricted holiday on account of Tithi of Sri Sankardeva.

It is learnt that many lower-level staff have already applied for restricted holiday on Saturday.

However, the situation is different for senior-level government officers including the heads of the departments. The senior officials had attended their office on Monday, and now they have no option other than attending to their duties on Saturday unlike their lower-level staff.
