SHILLONG: The recent announcement of the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner regarding appointment of fifty-five officers from various line departments as Labour Inspectors by the Department of Labour, has not gone down well with the the All Meghalaya Contractors’ & Suppliers’ Association (AMC&SA), which has expressed its unhappiness over the notification.

“This notification suggests that contractors are bringing labourers from outside, which is quite misleading. Besides the contractors, there are various groups like the coal exporters, businessmen and various shop owners who are employing people from outside,” AMC&SA general secretary BL Nongbri said in a statement on Tuesday.

Nongbri also clarified that the contractors are the only employers who have registered the labourers working under them.

It may be mentioned that the labour inspectors have been notified for the purpose of monitoring and inspecting construction sites to keep a check on illegal migrants. They will be assisted by the existing manpower in the Labour Department in East Khasi Hills District.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the District Level Task Force constituted for the purpose.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed that all principal employers and contractors have been directed to register their respective establishments and obtain license from the office of the Labour Commissioner within fifteen days failing which defaulters would be liable to penal action and prosecution as per Rules of the Inter Sate Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and conditions of Services) Act, 1979.
