SHILLONG: Garo National Council (GNC) chief Clifford Marak has decided to move a privilege motion against the Superintendent of Police of West Garo Hills, MK Singh, and Magistrate JJ Sangma for sending police and a Magistrate to raid his house at Tura on Thursday as part of a crack down on protestors demanding a separate Garo state.

The GNC legislator is supporting the move for the formation of a separate state and he was camping in Shillong when a police team raided his house at Tura.

According to Marak, neither the police nor the Magistrate sought sanction from the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker (in the absence of the Speaker), before raiding his house with the intention to arrest him.

Moreover, unless a court directs, the police cannot take law into their hands as far search in a legislator’s house is concerned, Marak said.

Marak said he had called up the Home Minister Roshan Warjri to know whether the Congress-led Government under the leadership of Dr Mukul Sangma gave any written order to arrest him.

Marak also informed that as the Speaker was out of station, he had cross-checked with the Deputy Speaker to know whether any sanction was given to arrest him, but the reply was in the negative.
