Alleged molestation by Garoland activists in Tura

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) has urged for a separate inquiry to investigate into the alleged molestation of the female staff of the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office by GHSMC activists recently.

“We need to have clarity since at the moment there are two different versions of this incident,” MSCW chairperson, Thelin Phanbuh said here on Monday.

Stating that on one hand, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Praveen Bakshi has alleged that besides assaulting the female staff, the statehood activists also molested them, Phanbuh said that the Commissioner of Garo Hills Division PW Ingty, however, questioned the authenticity of Bakshi’s claims.

“We are really concerned about this development and would like to know the actual fact,” the MSCW chairperson said.

Earlier, Ingty, who is also the Additional Development Commissioner for Garo Hills, said that initial reports had not indicated anything regarding molestation.

Similarly, the chairman of GHSMC, Nikman Marak has refuted the molestation charge saying that volunteers had requested all the employees to leave the office as a sign of support to the Statehood movement.

“If the volunteers molested the lady employee then the respective Deputy Commissioner should produce evidence since his office has CCTV cameras,” Marak said in statement.

“If this allegation of molestation is found to be false, then the DC will have to tender a public apology,” he added.
