Eco-friendly crematorium inaugurated at Shangpung

JOWAI: Forest and Environment Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday inaugurated an eco-friendly crematorium or Ka Khnap Thangbru in Pnar dialect at Shangpung-Khliehrangnah.

The crematorium was constructed by the Sein Raij Khliehrangnah and funded by the Dorbar Shnong of Shangpung- Khliehrangnah.

Secretary Working Committee Khnap Thangbru, Mihnyngkong Sutnga, informed that the construction cost expended was Rs. 15.20 lakh out of which Rs. 10. 47 lakh was funded by the Dorbar Shnong while Rs. 5 lakh was funded by local MLA Comingone Ymbon, out of which Rs 2 lakh was spent for construction of an approach road.

Sein Raij president Khliehrangnah, Ms. Eubina Sungoh, informed that the construction of the eco-friendly crematorium was based on the design and model of late Kambel Shullai- the inventor of the eco-friendly crematorium who had, in his lifetime, bagged several national awards for the innovation.

“The crematorium will help the people of the entire village at the time. The newly-constructed crematorium will help us save money, time and also the environment,” she said.

Speaking as the chief guest, Tynsong lauded the initiative of the Sein Raij Khliehrangnah and the Dorbar Shnong for the construction of the crematorium without any financial assistance from the State Government.

Concerned over rampant feeling of trees, Tynsong said, “We need to protect the environment and I am happy to learnt that the Sein Raij Khliehrangnah and the Dorbar Shnong has taken action by construction the crematorium so that when any life is lost and cremation is performed, less firewood will be required as compare to the traditional methods of cremation.

The inaugural function was presided over by local MLA and Parliamentary Secretary, Comingone Ymbon. Dolloi Jowai, KC Rymbai, Dolloi Shangpung, W Dhar, local MDC, KM Lyttan, Sein Raij Jowai president, JK Passah and Sein Raij Shangpung president, Dr. SS Manar, also spoke on the occasion.
