SHILLONG: Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has made a candid admission about the outdated skill development course offered by the Industrial Training Institutes in the State and called for an urgent need to revamp the curriculum.
Lyngdoh, while speaking to The Shillong Times, asserted that the State Government would revamp and update the skill development courses at ITI shortly to ensure that the youth attain employment.
“ITIs are running obsolete courses which do not ensure jobs in this modern world thus leading to unemployment,” Lyngdoh observed.
Reacting to a query on the growing problem of unemployment, Lyngdoh admitted that the level of unemployment is increasing in the State, while maintaining that unemployment has become a growing phenomenon in the first world countries.
The State Government is also concerned about the employment of large chunks of youths who do not match up to the high academic credentials required in this modern world.
According to Lyngdoh, there are a large number of youths who have poor academic credentials and about 40-43 per cent of youths in the State have not been able to clear their Class X examinations.
To provide employment to such youths, the Labour department is mulling to initiate Skill Development Programmes so as to categorize youths as per their academic and skill calibre.
For this purpose, the State Government has targeted to rope in around five thousand youths while the entire initiative is under process, she informed.
“We will also seek a tie-up with national technical institutes to facilitate the same,” the Labour Minister said.
