Guwahati: With a view to strengthen the force, Assam Police on Wednesday said it will recruit around 10,000 personnel within next three months, the process of which will start from October this year.

“We have a total vacancy of around 10,000 people. We want to fill these as soon as possible… In the next three months, we will complete hiring these people,” Director General of Police Jayanto N Choudhury told PTI here.

The department will bring out the notice for the recruitment exercise next month, followed by written tests and other selection processes, he said.

Elaborating on the vacancy situation, Choudhury said: “We will hire around 8,000 constables. Out of that, 6,500 armed constable posts are lying vacant. In addition, we have got sanction for creating 1,300 posts for un-armed constables.” Besides, 350 sub-inspector posts are vacant in Assam Police at present along with other higher positions, he added.

Earlier this week, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had said around 40,000 posts were lying vacant in different departments under the state government that would be filled up within next six months.

The Education department has highest number of vacancies, followed by the police.

When asked about police-citizen relationship in the state, Choudhury said “We have taken many steps, but still there is a lot to be done. In this direction, we will start a citizens portal, in which people can directly write to us with their complaints, besides giving us feedback for improvement.”

The portal, which is being developed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, is likely to go live by next month.

The police department is also giving soft skill training to its personnel for improving their behaviour while dealing with the public, he said.

To further boost the relationship with the civil society, a national debate competition and a national quiz competition is being organised later this month to celebrate the Assam Police Day, Choudhury said.

When asked about syndicate in food items, the DGP said “We have broken once such cartel recently. We thought that market force would come up after that. However, it did not and the cartelisation is happening again in almost every food items like fish, egg that are coming from outside Assam.”

On terrorism, Choudhury said Assam police will strengthen its operations against the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) cadres across various places in the state. (PTI)
