HNYF questions efficacy of Tenancy Act

SHILLONG: The pro-ILP group HNYF has questioned the claim of the State Government that proposed Tenancy Act would help in checking the problem of influx of illegal migrants.

“The proposed act will only protect and safeguard the tenants. We do not feel that this (Tenancy Act) would help in addressing the problem influx in the State,” HNYF general secretary Sadon K Blah said here on Wednesday.

He said illegal immigrants who come to the States work in hotels, shops, coal mines and industries.

“I do not think that they would rent a place to stay. They stay in places where they do not have to pay rent. As has been the practice, ten of them can stay in a small shed,” Blah said adding “this kind of people would not come under the purview of the proposed Tenancy Act.”

Blah felt that the adamant attitude of the State Government in opposing implementation of ILP system clearly reflects the vote bank politics of the Congress.

“Congress is known for its minority appeasement policy. The Congress-led Government in Meghalaya is following the same policy of the Congress Government in Assam,” HNYF general secretary said.

He said the implementation of ILP would definitely have a huge impact on the vote banks of Congress since there are many constituencies in both Khasi and Garo Hills region which have a huge chunk of illegal immigrant voters.

He said that they are firm on their demand for implementing of ILP.
