Imphal: The Manipur Home Department has ordered a Magisterial inquiry into the alleged extra-judicial killing of two people by the Manipur Police and 39 Assam Rifles at Sekmai on November 7, 2008.
One Salam Ajit Singh of Thanga Heisnam Leikai and Yumnam Binoy Meitei of Lamjao Mayai Leikai were the victims.
K Radhakumar Singh, District Magistrate, Imphal West, has asked the people to submit statements by October 5 regarding the killings. The government had ordered probe after allegations were made that the two people were innocent and had gone to purchase goods.
Two people were also reported missing. About Rs 2 lakhs in cash and gold ornaments were looted, locals had alleged.
Meanwhile, the security personnel maintained that both were killed in an encounter.
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam said if there is evidence and enough proof of any wrong doing, proper action will be initiated. Regarding the ongoing stir demanding the arrest of one Major Sreeramkumar of 39 Assam Rifles, allegedly involved in the kidnapping and killing of a man in 2009, he said law will take its own course.
Y Krishnadas Singh of Kakching was allegedly kidnapped in June 2009 by suspected Assam Rifles personnel and later his body was found the same month. His family members reportedly gave Rs 25 lakhs as ransom.
Major Kumar was awarded the prestigious Ashok Chakra, the highest peace time gallantry award, in appreciation of his outstanding performance in combating militancy in Manipur on the occasion of Independence Day in 2010.
The officer was also found involved in the killing of two brothers–identified as N Nobo and N Govind–earlier. (UNI)
