SHILLONG: St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, representing Meghalaya, have qualified for the quarterfinals of the under-14 54th Subroto Mukherjee Cup after defeating Sainik School, Andhra Pradesh, 6-0 during a Pool E match played in New Delhi on Tuesday.

While Rheadolf Nongneng scored two goals in the 15th and 28th minutes, the other four goals were scored by Melvin Marbaniang, Pynbha Suting, Mark Iver Majaw and Kynsai Khongsit.

St Anthony’s will now play their quarterfinal on October 4, meeting the winner of Pool F.

Meanwhile, defending champions Greenwood School of Nagaland kept their title defence on track with a hard-fought 3-1 triumph over an impressive North-Eastern English School, Manipur.

Although the final score tells a different story, it was a difficult encounter for the U-14 Nagaland team who became the first to enter the last four stage.

Their defence was put under pressure in the initial stages by the Manipur forwards and conceded the lead thanks to a fantastic strike by Alloudin.

It was a battle of equals although the Greenwood boys made better use of their chances with Nukhosa (25th min), Nokethozo (26th) and Tokavi (48th) finding the target, thus sealing their semifinal spot.

Meanwhile, coming from Afghanistan, Kabul champions Ghazi High School had a memorable Subroto debut with a 2-0 win over Government School, Haryana.

Delhi institutions, Air Force School and Mamta Modern School, finished their campaigns disappointingly.

The former were handed a massive 15-0 thrashing by Government Chawngfianga Middle School, Mizoram, who maintained the prevailing trend of one-sided contests. Striker Lalawnpuia led the way, equalling this year’s record of most goals scored in a single match with seven strikes. (with PTI inputs)
