NONGPOH: Together with the rest of the country, the Nongpoh Town Committee (NTC) in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, observed Gandhi Jayanti by organizing the Green Campaign, as part of which a cleaning drive of the entire Nongpoh Town comprising of 19 localities was organised.
The Green Campaign of the NTC was attended by Ri Bhoi District Deputy Commissioner Dr. Pooja Pandey, in the presence of NTC Chairman CB Syiem, Nongpoh Rangbah Shnong Bull Lyngdoh, Mawroh Rangbah Shnong Opel Lyngdoh, P Tiewsoh, Rev. MS Shadap, along with other elders of Nongpoh Town. The programme was presided over by Addl. Deputy Commissioner, I Mawlong.
Delivering her speech, the DC applauded the NTC for taking the initiative to hold the Green Campaign to observe Gandhi Jayanti. She reminded the gathering of the life, struggle and sufferings of the Father of the Nation for the sake of the country.
The DC was of the opinion that the Green Campaign movement does not mean planting of trees and make the environment clean but aims at inculcating the habit of judicious and economical use of the non renewable resources. She urged the residents of Nongpoh to take a new pledge towards cleanliness so as to make Nongpoh a better place to live. While informing about the different programmes initiated by the government to ensure cleanliness in and around the district in particular and the State in general, Pandey said, “Under the Green Campaign Movement, programmes will be initiate by the Government which includes awareness campaign, inspection of shops, hotel and other establishments by official for ensuring the cleanliness and the cleanest of them all will be rewarded.”
To mark the occasion, cleaning drives were organised in different parts of both East and West Jaintia Hills districts by the District Administration which saw active participation of the local residents, our Jowai correspondent informed.
In Iawmusiang, Jowai, the cleaning drive was organised jointly by the District Administration and the Jowai Traders’ Association.
Hundreds of student from different schools and members of the traders’ association, besides government officials participated in the cleaning drive.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner, PS Dkhar while inaugurating the cleaning drive programme, stressed on the importance of cleanliness.
He also informed that stern action will be taken against vendors if they are found to occupy spaces along the footpath in Iawmusiang area.
Village Dorbar in different part of Jowai town including Khimusniang, Mooralong, Loomsooiung and others also organised cleaning drives in their respective villages and localities.
The Dorbar Shnong Khimusniang village held an awareness campaign on Tuesday evening in which the Chief Executive Officer, Jowai Municipal Board, who is also the Addl. Deputy Commissioner, was the chief guest.
