Guwahati: A wildlife NGO observed the ongoing Wildlife Week by organising a public ‘shradh’ or memorial service of an elephant killed recently along the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border in Assam. Green Guard Nature Organisation organised the memorial service for the tusker along with fringe forest communities living in the Human-Elephant Conflict Zone at the Karbi foothills along the Nagaon- Karbi Anglong border on Wednesday.

The mutilated body of the elephant was found on September 25 last at Hodhodi, near Chapanala, Nagaon, with a gaping bullet wound and with its tusks, ears and a part of the trunk hacked off.

The theme of Sanctuary Asia’s ‘Leave Me Alone’ campaign was used to convey the message that these magnificent creatures only need space and undisturbed habitats to survive.

Two ‘Bhim Kol’ plants, the giant species of local banana, relished by elephants were planted at the burial spot. Sanctuary Asia Tiger Defender Dulu Bora made the entire arrangements for the memorial service to sensitize these communities about nature conservation. (PTI)
