Assam PHE minister reviews schemes

Guwahati: Assam Minister for Public Health Engineering, Gautam Roy on Saturday reviewed the progress of various schemes of the PHE Department. Roy directed the officers to expedite the process of implementation of the ongoing schemes. He further asked them to complete the target of various schemes of the Department within the current financial year. The Secretary and other senior officers of the Department were present in the meeting. (UNI)

Ajmal reelected state Jamiat Ulama’s president

Guwahati: Lok Sabha member Badruddin Ajmal has been reelected as the president of the Assam State Jamiat Ulama. Ajmal’s re-election was unanimously supported by the members yesterday so that the organization can become a vibrant entity under his leadership. The Jamiat Ulama was floated in 2011 after breaking away from the Asad Madani-led Jamiat Ulema E Hind. Ajmal, who represents Dhubri (Assam) in the Lok Sabha, also heads the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the second largest party in the Assam Assembly. Taking charge as the new president, Ajmal said he will continue to work for communal harmony among all sections and castes and appealed to the people to be vigilant against divisive forces, especially ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections. Nagaland police nabs rhino poacher

Kohima: In a surprised move by tracking a tip-off, Nagaland police was able to arrest one rhino poacher from Niuland area under Dimapur district, for his involvement in many cases of rhino poaching and dealing in wildlife products in the international market. According to an official statement on Saturday, the arrest was made based on inputs from Assam Police, at Niuland on September 28 and the accused has been identified as one Rati Ram Sarma (65) of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. The accused was involved with a network of illegal poaching and smuggling of wildlife products across India, Nepal and Bhutan. The Assam government had reportedly announced a huge reward for the capture of Rati Ram. He was handed over to Assam Police at Bokajan in Karbi Anglong district of Assam, where he is wanted in connection with a case registered against him, the release said. (UNI)

Tripura court sent ‘saint’ to jail

Agartala: A local court of Sabroom in South Tripura has sent a middle aged saint to 14 days judicial custody allegedly for establishing physical relation with several women over past three months. According to police, five tribal women of Silachari lodged separate complaint against the saint Katanga Mog that he had been sexually exploiting them in the name of religious performance for blessing them with children. All the women were reportedly childless and they came to the accused for blessings. (UNI)
