India end archery c’ship sans medal

New Delhi: The Indian archery team ended their campaign in the World Championships empty-handed without any medal after the compound mixed team lost to United States in the bronze medal play-off at Belek, Turkey, on Saturday. The Indian pair of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Abhishek Verma lost 151-156 to the American duo of Jesse Broadwater and Erika Jones. This is the worst ever performance by Indian archers in any World Championships. Earlier, both the men’s and women’s compound teams lost in the pre-quarterfinals on Friday. The men’s compound trio of Rajat Chauhan, Sandeep Kumar and Abhishek Verma, who were seeded 13th, were no match to their fourth seeded opponents from France and lost 176-188 in the pre-quarterfinals. In the women’s compound team event, Trisha Deba, Jhano Hansdah and Jyothi Surekha Vennam lost to world’s top-ranked side, USA 156-172 in the pre-quarters. India’s campaign in the individual events had ended on Thursday. (PTI)

Gangjee, Kapur still struggle in Taiwan

Tamsui (TAIWAN): The course continued to test the golfers as only four managed to break par in the third round of the Taiwan Masters at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club here on Saturday. There is also a threat of Typhoon Fitow expected to bring torrential rain and gusty winds over the weekend in Tamsui. Rahil Gangjee, one-over for the front nine, dropped three bogeys between 11th and 15th before posting a birdie on 18th during his round of 75. At a total of six-over 222 he was tied 22nd, down five places from overnight 17th. Shiv Kapur had a tough time with a card of 80 that included nine birdies and just one birdie. He is now 13-over for three rounds and in 50th place. Australia’s Scott Hend stood on the brink of his fourth Asian Tour win when he carded a two-under-par 70 to regain his lead after the third round. Overnight leader Sam Cyr of the United States slipped to second place after signing for a 73 on a day where only four players managed to break par. Bangladesh’s Siddikur remained in contention for his second win on the region’s premier Tour when he posted a 71 to share third place with Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat who carded a 72 at the richest Asian Tour event to be staged in Chinese Taipei this season. 4 medals for Indians at Track Asia meet

New Delhi: Indian junior riders made a sensational start to their campaign in the Track Asia Cycling Championship in Thailand by winning one gold and three silvers on the opening day. Teen sensation from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Deborah, bagged the gold medal in the Time Trial event while Manorama Devi bagged silver medals in Scratch and Point races and Dilawar Singh from Haryana added the third silver in Point race for India. The Indian contingent has been taking big strides in Asian cycling ever since the last edition of the Asian championship in New Delhi in March, where India won two silver and two bronze for the first time ever. The performance of the Indian contingent had even attracted the Korean Cycling Federation, who had invited both Deborah and Manorama Devi to train with their national squad before this championship. “Indian cycling has been on the rise and these results are very encouraging for all of us. These players have put in a lot of hard work in the last few months and I am extremely happy that they could translate those efforts into medal,” said Onkar Singh, Secretary, Cycling Federation of India. Shimoga: Opener Kraigg Brathwaite smashed a brilliant century while Narasingh Deonaraine cracked a flamboyant 93 as the second unofficial Test between India A and West Indies A ended in a tame draw here on Saturday.
