SHILLONG: The Chancellor of CMJ University, CM Jha has again skipped the scheduled interrogation dates fixed by the CID for four days from October 5, exposing laxity on the part of the CID.

Supreme Court lawyer Ranjan Mukherjee, who appeared on behalf of the State Government on the interim bail related case, on Tuesday said over phone from Delhi that on the pretext of appearing for the case in Delhi, Jha skipped interrogation on October 5, 6 7 and 8 in Shillong.

“Jha wrote to CID by saying that he had to rush to Delhi for the case,” Mukherjee said.

The matter was apprised to the Court during the hearing on Tuesday.

Earlier on September 21, while the CID was waiting for Jha to appear before the Investigating Officer, he wrote a letter to officer by saying that he had to rush to Bihar since his wife was sick.

However, it turned out to be false according to Mukherjee, who had apprised the Court that the matter was inquired by Police in Bihar.

Mukherjee said that the Court allowed to file an affidavit on the whimsical nature of Jha within one week and the case will be taken up again on October 28.

According to Mukherjee, during the days he appeared, Jha did not fully co-operate with the CID as he did not answer questions directly.

“The Investigation Officer recorded the statement of Jha on various dates, and though he joined the investigation, he had not cooperated with the CID”, the lawyer said.

According to the lawyer, when Jha was confronted with official documents related to the case by the CID, the reply of Jha was that he was not aware of anything.

“The kind of reply Jha was giving does not indicate that he was cooperating with the CID. Mere chit chat is not investigation in the eye of law”, Mukherjee added.
