SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that the government needs to create the necessary infrastructure so that it can optimally use the services of employees who have been given a particular task.
Dr Sangma was intervening during Tuesday’s question hour in the ongoing State Assembly session in the city after South Tura independent legislator John Leslee K Sangma lamented the fact that a karate coach, who was appointed for Tura in June 2006, has not been fully utilised.
The Chief Minister said that he would instruct all departments, including the concerned Sports and Youth Affairs, to make sure that the necessary infrastructure exists before any new posts are created by the government.
“It is not a good thing to appoint anyone without having the basic infrastructures to utilise the services of such employees,” the CM said.
Earlier in his reply, Sports Minister Zenith Sangma informed the house that the karate coach in Tura has trained 30 students so far.
John Leslee, however, expressed surprise that only 30 students have been trained by the coach since his appointment seven years ago.
He also claimed that they were only taught the basics of the martial art form.
Zenith, meanwhile, informed that there was no permanent location to coach the trainees, which was proving to be a hindrance.
“Earlier, the Monfort Centre of Education was utilised but later they too denied permission,” the Sports Minister said.
However, the South Tura MLA countered the minister in charge by arguing that the main reason for the particular coach training only 30 students was because his services were mainly utilised in the state capital and not in Tura, as was intended.
In his reply Zenith said that the District Sports Office, Tura, had sent letters to the various schools in West Garo Hills district inviting them to use the services of the coach, but the schools did not show much interest.
