SHILLONG: The separation of the investigation of crimes from other functions of the police is at the final stage and the State government is all set to complete the process tentatively within this year.

Informing this here on Thursday, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said that this separation of the investigation unit from the law and order machineries will ensure speedy disposal of cases besides helping in quick chargesheeting and conviction.

Warjri also informed that in the first phase, the pilot project will be implemented in Shillong and Tura and the same will be carried out in all the other district headquarters subsequently.

“This would also help in ensuring greater accountability on the part of the police officers speeding up the investigation process which otherwise is time-consuming,” said the Home Minister adding that the deterrent effect of law would become visible.

Warjri also said that there will be a dedicated team of officers to deal with investigation alone.

“With proper training and experience over time, this should lead to faster and better investigation and higher convictions,” she said.
