Baby charred to death

SHILLONG: In a tragic incident, a one-year-and-9-month-old baby died when the house he was in caught fire at Pingwait village under Mawkynrew block, Mawsynram on Wednesday.
At the time of the incident, which took place around 4-30pm, the mother of the ill-fated baby was away fetching water.
According to police, the house of Ihir Nongrum caught fire while she was out fetching water leaving a 7-year-old daughter Batihun Nongrum and the baby Mebankitkhia Nongrum at home.
The baby died on the spot while the daughter managed to escape unharmed.
Ruling out possibility of involvement of pro-ILP volunteers, police termed the case as accidental fire incident.
