SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, M Kharkrang, has came out strongly against the criticism by certain groups over the patrolling duties conducted by gypsy-bound personnel in the city during the recent Durga puja celebrations.
Seng Samla Shilliang Umkhen president Judah Wahlang had criticized the police by stating that the way the police were patrolling in the Khasi-dominated localities was ‘adding fuel to the situation’.
Kharkrang justified that it was the duty of the police to ensure that the rule of the law prevailed.
“After the incident at Motphran, there was apprehension in the minds of people and we are duty bound to instill a sense of confidence in them,” Kharkrang said.
Kharkrang also stated that since the past one-and-half month criminals had been targeting people of all communities and police have been trying their best to restore law and order by arresting many of the criminals.
“It is regrettable that some people have tried to paint a different colour to the efforts made by the police,” he said.
He also made it clear that as the district police chief, he would ensure that police continue to do what is right as per the ‘law of the land which governs everyone’.
The Seng Samla had also decried the provocative attitude of the police personnel who had covered their face and were carrying weapons while standing on the vehicles, leading to a sense of insecurity among the people.
