Govt to arrange transportation facilities on NEHU convocation day

SHILLONG: Acting on the request of NEHU authorities, the State Government has agreed to arrange buses to facilitate students to attend the 21st Convocation ceremony of the North Eastern Hill University on Tuesday.

“We have decided to respond positively to the request of the University,” Principal Secretary in charge Home department, KS Kropha, informed on Friday.

Earlier, Acting Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof P Shukla, had said that in view of the 36-hour bandh called by the HNLC, the University has sought assistance of the State Government to make arrangements for transportation of students for attending the Convocation ceremony.

“We have requested the Government to arrange for buses to fetch students from the various points of the city to the NEHU campus on the day of the convocation. We are also planning to utilize our University buses for dropping students after the ceremony from the University gate,” Prof Shukla said.

Meanwhile, the University has appealed to the HNLC to withdraw the proposed bandh that coincides with the convocation ceremony.

“This will enable the University to confer the various degrees to over 8000 students and to all special awardees and gold medalists,” NEHU Pro-Vice Chancellor P Myrboh said in a statement on Friday.

The NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has also made an appeal to the HNLC to withdraw the bandh.

“As students we sincerely appeal to the organization to exempt the bandh for the convocation so that students can attend the event without any restrictions and also give their parents the pleasure of seeing their ward/ child holding a degree,” said NEHUSU president Peacestar L Nonglait.

While stating that as a student it is necessary to attend the convocation that takes place once a year, Nonglait said that over 2600 aspirants from across the Northeastern states and other parts of the country will partake in the ceremony.
