Centre ready to open Eklavya school in state

SHILLONG: Union Minister for Tribal Affairs V Kishore Chandra Deo has assured that an Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) would be set up in the State once his Ministry receives a formal request from the State Government in this connection.

“The State Government has to first submit a proposal to the Centre. The matter would then be forwarded to my ministry. Once the proposal reaches my ministry, I can assure that the setting up of EMRS in the State would cleared immediately,” Deo said in his address before inaugurating the two-day Monolith Festival at Mawphlang near hear on Friday.

The Eklavya Model Residential Schools were initiated by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for providing free high quality education to meritorious tribal children.

The objective of EMRS is to provide quality middle and high level education to Scheduled Tribe students in remote areas, not only to enable them to avail of reservation in high and professional educational courses, and jobs in government, public and private sectors, but also to have access to the best opportunities in education at par with the non-ST population.

He said that the State Government will only have to provide 15 acres of land for setting up of this school.

Earlier, Rajya Sabha member Wansuk Syiem in her address urged the Union Tribal Affairs Minister to set up EMRS in the State.
