Politcal blame game over attacks
Patna/New Delhi: A political blame game over the Patna serial blasts erupted on Sunday with the BJP, whose rally by Narendra Modi was targeted, alleging the security at the venue was inadequate and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ruling out any lapse on this score.
BJP leader Sushma Swaraj also blamed a “gross intelligence failure” for the blasts while Nitish said there were no intelligence inputs about the explosions either from the Centre or from the state.
Congress leader Rashid Alvi went on to say that any probe into the blasts should also find out if any political parties were behind the blasts for personal benefits.
Questions on the timing of the blasts on the day of the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate’s rally were also raised by political parties.
Expressing surprise over the “coincidence” of bomb blasts and Modi’s rally, Congress’s Digvijay Singh called for a thorough probe, noting that it could otherwise create a “perfect setting for Modi’s launch in Bihar”.
Nitish said the timing of the blasts was “very worrying”.
JDU leader Sabir Ali said authorities will not spare anyone behind the incidents.
“But who has benefitted from the incident, who has benefited from its timing,” he asked.
Asked if the BJP was allegedly behind the blasts, Ali said, “the circumstances are speaking a lot of things. We are not naming anyone before the inquiry is complete but circumstances are speaking a lot.”
BJP’s Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad sought a thorough probe into the blasts and said the response of state police was not adequate even though the rally was fixed eight months ago.
“The police should have taken precautions after the first blast.
“There were no metal detectors, frisking and other security measures at the rally.
“The police preparations left much to be desired,” he said.
Prasad said even though they saw the first blast from the podium, they played it down to prevent any panic reaction.
Defending the security arrangements, Nitish said, “There were no intelligence inputs either from the Centre or from the state.
“Whatever was possible to do for this kind of a programme, the administration had done. “I would like to assure BJP that there were no shortcomings in the arrangements,” he added.
RJD MP Ramkirpal Yadav blamed the JD(U) government for the blast, saying it must be responsible for this “lax” in security.
BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said, “This was complete failure of the IB and the CID and when there is a failure of law and order, there is going to be acrimony between the communities because of security of the environment.”
Reacting to the incident, JDU President Sharad Yadav said he did not know whether there was a “wrongdoing” in the incident. “If there is any wrongdoing, it will come out in the investigations. No one has even called me from Bihar and I will be going there in the evening,” he said.
Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi demanded an independent probe into the serial blasts in Patna.
It was the responsibility of the state governments to make security arrangements ahead of rallies, he said.
An independent inquiry into the serial blasts in Patna should be held at the earliest, Joshi said in Lucknow. (PTI)
