SHILLONG: The first rifle and pistol shooting championship of Meghalaya concluded on Tuesday, organised by Meghalaya Rifle and Shooting Association.

As many as 15 events in both categories were held.

The event saw the participation of 11 associations and clubs – Mawlynrei Shooting Association, Meghalaya Rifle and Shooting Association, Meghalaya Powergrid, Pyndeng Umiong Shooting Club (Mairang), Mawrengkneng Sports Club, Marbisu Sports Club, Liaison Sports Club, Meghalaya NCC Shooting Association , Happy Valley Shooting Association, St Anthony’s College Shooting Association and Ex-Servicemen Shooting Association.

More than 100 participants, both men and women took part in different shooting events.

The two day shooting contest was inaugurated by Brig William JB Sturgeon on Monday.

He said that the primary objective of the event was to promote the spirit of high competitiveness in Olympics standards and to familiarise the youth with such competitions.

The last rifle shooting championship of this kind here was organised in honour of the Governor of undivided Assam, Jairam Das Doulatram in 1957 at Polo Ground in which the late Hamlet Pariat was adjudged the overall champion. He was awarded the Doulatram Cup.

This year’s championship follows close on the heels of a shooting ‘talent search’ conducted by the Shooting Association of Meghalaya earlier in the month.
