SHILLONG: To check the rising cases of eve-teasing, the Supreme Court has directed the state government to install CCTV cameras at strategic locations and at the same time to direct the police department to take effective and proper measures to curb occurrence of such incidents.

According to a statement issued by the State Political Department, the apex court also instructed to take adequate and effective measures by issuing suitable instructions to the concerned authorities including the district collectors and the district superintendent of police so as to take effective measures to curb eve-teasing.

The government officials further added that the ruling passed recently has also directed all the state governments to depute plain clothed female police officers in the precincts of bus stands and stops, railway stations, metro stations, cinema theatres, shopping malls, parks, beaches, public service vehicles, places of worship and others so as to monitor and supervise incidents of eve teasing.

It may be mentioned that at present, the state police department is evaluating a proposal of installing CCTV cameras at some strategic locations of the capital.

It was earlier reported that Police would team up with BSNL to install CCTVs in many parts of the city. However, this plan is still hanging fire.

Absence of CCTV cameras in the commercial hubs of the State has made it difficult for the law enforcers to identify culprits who take advantage of the volatile situation to indulge in arson and other anti-social activities.

Despite talks since the last few years that police would install CCTVs in collaboration with commercial institutions in the vulnerable locations of Shillong, nothing has materialised so far. Former DGP N Ramchandran has assiduously pursued this idea of a “Safe and secure Shillong,” but retired before its fruition.
