SHILLONG: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya has asked three autonomous district councils to seriously take into consideration the need to formulate the acts and rules of the 54 Himas/ Elaka of the Khasi Hills, 18 Elaka Dolloi, one Sirdarship in Jaintia Hills and in 1400 areas in Garo Hills looked after by the Nokmas to strengthen and preserve the customary practices of the indigenous tribes of the State.

The council has impressed upon the need to implement these rules to protect and preserve the culture and traditional governance of the tribals just as it was done in Hima Nongstoin and Hima Maharam.

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council in the past had agreed to formulate these rules and the same proposal was sent to the District Council Affairs department and after thorough examination, the same was sent to the governor for his consent and following his approval, the Administration of Nongstoin Syiemship Rules 2006 was implemented in Hima Nongstoin.

The same with Hima Maharam where under Section 9 of the Nomination and Election of the Syiem, Deputy Syiem, and Electors of Hima Maharam) Act 2006, the Maharam Syiemship (Administration) Rules 2009 was implemented
