India beat Oman 3-0 in Asian hockey

Kakamigahara (Japan): India registered their first win of the third Asian Champions Trophy, defeating Oman 3-0 in their third hockey league match here on Tuesday. India opened the scoring against the run of play in the 19th minute when a lapse from Oman defence allowed Akashdeep Singh into the circle and he made no mistake in scoring a goal. India scored their second goal in the 30th minute after a fine run on the left by Prabhdeep Singh whose cross came off the stick of Faiz Helmi and fell nicely for Talwinder Singh to score. At half time India were leading 2-0. In the 62nd minute, Amit Rohidas converted a penalty corner for India to seal the tie. India will now face arch rivals Pakistan in their next league match on Thursday. (IANS)

Moore seeks 50th Indian Open title

New Delhi: Jonathan Moore will vie for his first Asian Tour title at the 50th Indian Open at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) here, a venue he rates as unique. The American will be among an elite field including Robert Rock of England, a two-time winner in Europe, Jbe Kruger of South Africa, Pariya Junhasavasdikul of Thailand, a two-time Asian Tour winner, and Swede Daniel Chopra at the showpiece, which starts on Thursday. Arjun Atwal, the first Indian to win on the PGA Tour, Anirban Lahiri, who won three of his Asian Tour titles at DGC, Gaganjeet Bhullar, ranked third on the Asian Tour Order of Merit and an in-form Shiv Kapur will spearhead the local challenge. Moore feels more comfortable playing at DGC now compared to his first experience in 2011 where he was caught off-guard by the narrow and tree lined fairways. “The DGC is unique. I have never played another course where guys are taking the drivers out of the golf bag. I’m taking out my driver this week too. I have a three wood that would hopefully do the job. I think the venue is fitting for the Indian Open’s golden anniversary,” said the 28-year-old, who enjoyed a solid 2012 where he finished seventh on the Order of Merit. Currently 87th on the Merit ranking, Moore will need a solid result or a victory this week to secure playing rights for the 2014 Asian Tour. The top-60 players at the end of 2013 will earn an Asian Tour card for 2014. “I haven’t had the best year so far but this week is a good week to try and save my card. You just need that one week to get a good finish so hopefully it will be this week,” said Moore. (PTI)

Woods to participate in Turkish event

Antalya (Turkey): The $7 million Turkish Airlines Open, to be held at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal Course here from November 7-10, will form part of the inaugural Final Series in the Race to Dubai and will feature World No. 1 Tiger Woods. Fourteen-time Major champion Woods will be part of the 78-man field for the first ever European Tour event in Turkey. “I had a great time during my first visit to Turkey. Turkish Airlines, the Turkish Golf Federation and the fans made it a really special event and I’m looking forward to playing there once again,” said Woods, who has had four wins this season on the US PGA Tour including the recent Players Championship. Sir Viv monument vandalised

St John’s (Antigua): Antigua & Barbuda Cricket Association (ABCA) president Zorol Barthley is outraged after one of the monuments of the country’s living national hero, Sir Vivian Richards, was vandalised. Barthley has blasted the vandalism as “disgraceful” and “offensive” and said it’s an indication of a lack of national pride. The monument, located on Sir Vivian Richards Street – not far from the house where the cricket legend was raised – was recently damaged. “Our society is very wanting in that regard and it is shameful, disgraceful that someone would damage things that display our history, accomplishments and positive contributions to Antigua & Barbuda, the region and the world. Sir Viv is an internationally known legend,” Barthley said. A sign recently posted on the area where the bust was erected, reads: “Removed for repairs due to vandalism.” Barthley suggests that authorities might need to erect fencing to protect the structure.
