People get relief with rise in night temperature in Kashmir

Srinagar:  The night temperature across Kashmir rose by several degrees, providing much needed relief to the people from over week-long biting cold. Barring Leh in frontier region of Ladakh, the minimum temperature settled above freezing point owing to overcast skies with summer capital Srinagar recording a pleasant seven degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, during this part of the season, a spokesman of the MeT department said. Leh recorded a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius while the nearby Kargil town recorded a minimum of 0.4 degrees Celsius, he said. Pahalgam, a hill resort in south Kashmir, recorded a temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius as compared to zero degree Celsius the previous night, while the mercury settled at 1.2 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg Ski resort – the star attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winter, the spokesman said. However, the respite from the cold might not last long as the weatherman has warned isolated heavy rains or snow over the state during the next 24 hours. “Light to moderate rain/thundershower would occur at many places with isolated heavy rain/snow over the state during next 24 hours due to a fresh western disturbance,” the spokesman said.
