Police arrest highway robbers

SHILLONG: The city police on Wednesday arrested four people including the ‘kingpin’ Pynshai Rani (31) from here for their alleged involvement in robbing a truck driver and a handyman at Sohiong view point on November 3.

Besides Rani, who was recently released on bail, the three other accused have been identified as Haljis Lyngdoh (48), Rukman Gurung (23) and Bankerlang Khardewsaw (22). According to police another accused in the incident is still absconding.

SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed that the four accused had robbed the truck driver Divonsing Mawlong along with the handyman Kitbok Mawlong at Sohiong viewpoint at gun point while they were on their way to Nongstoin from Shillong.

According to Syiem, the accused robbed Rs 69,320 from the truck driver while snatching away the mobile phones of both the driver and the handyman.

“We have seized the mobile phones from their possession, however, they have already spent the money which they robbed,” Syiem told newsmen here on Thursday.

He also informed that the miscreants used a toy gun to rob the driver-handyman duo. The police also seized a vehicle (ML05 E 9966) from their possession.

“All the four accused have been remanded in six-day police custody,” Syiem informed.

The SP (City) also informed that Rani has earlier been booked in at least six to seven cases of robbery.
