SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union Jaintia Hills District Unit has condemned the brutal killing of five police personnel including two Khasi policemen – Lekichyne Ryngkhlem and Marshanstar Nongdhar – by the banned militant outfit GNLA at South Garo Hills last week.

“We condemn the violent activities of the GNLA who without reasons ambushed the police personnel on duty and killed five of them while they were on their way to Tura,” KSU JHDU general secretary Streamly S Niangti said.

The KSU has stated that the State Government has to launch a manhunt operation to hunt down the perpetrators involved in the killing.

“What is surprising to note is that, despite knowing the fact that Garo Hills is a disturbed region, the number of police personnel sent to escort the UTP was very less and the same were without bullet proof vests,” Niangti said, adding that the higher officials have all the luxuries with escorts (SWATs) following them everywhere even in and around the town, but the real people who really need it, are neglected.

The Union has also extended its condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased. “We also demand the government to conduct an enquiry into the matter,” the KSU leader said.
