Pine Mount School Alumni Association holds elocution contest

Guwahati: An inter-school elocution contest was organised by the Pine Mount School Alumni Association, Assam Chapter on Saturday last, in the auditorium of the Bishnu Nirmala Trust, Guwahati. 56 students from different schools of Guwahati participated in the competition.

Dr Tillottama Barua, renowned educationist was the Chief guest of the function, while Mrs Tulu Bora, retired school teacher from Pine Mount School was the guest of honour. The judges of the contest were Mr Ranjit Choudhury, former Professor of English dept, Cotton College, Mrs Loney Chaliha Principal Raj Hans Shishu Vidyalaya and Mrs Bula Chowdhury, Subject Teacher, Pan Bazar Government Girls High School.

The Jugal Kishore Chowdhury Memorial Running Trophy, in memory of Late JK Chowdhury, renowned architect went to Maria’s Public school. Students were judged in 3 categories – Class VIII, Class IX and Class X. There was cash awards of Rs 2000, Rs 1500 and Rs 1000 for the first, second and third places respectively. Prize winners were: Class VIII: 1st- Meghma Kotoky Maria’s Public School, 2nd- Disha Saikia, 3rd- Nimisha Anubhuti Barman both from Sanskriti The Gurukul. Class IX: 1st- Vaibhavi Sharma Pathak and 2nd- Arundhati Choudhury from Maria’s Public School, 3rd- Doreen Bora from Maharshri Vidya Mandir. Class X: 1st- Angarika Das from Maria’s Public School, 2nd- Abhishek Paul from Faculty HS School, 3rd- Brihi Joshi from Sarla Birla GyanJyoti.

The Pine Mount school, a premier educational institution for girls, was established in Shillong in the 1890s. The Pine Mount Alumni Association, Guwahati chapter, was set up a few years ago, with the objective of fostering a close association between the School and its alumni and to promote social, philanthropic and developmental activities in the state of Assam.

In the past year the Alumni Association Members visited Amar Ghar, an old age home in Panikheti, Blind School at Narangi and Orphanage. The Alumni Association has also adopted a girl child from Raj Hans Shishu Vidyalaya and is committed to paying the costs of her education till Class X.

MPP Vice-President shot dead

Imphal: Vice President of the Manipur People’s Party (MPP) Mani Sana was on Wednesday shot dead by some unidentified gunmen at Changangei area in Imphal west district of Manipur, police said. Sana was shot dead at around 10 AM while he was travelling from his house at Thanga area in Bishenpur district to party office here, sources said. He died on the spot, sources said, adding that his body has been sent to Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital here for post mortem. No individual or group has claimed responsibility, sources said, adding that motive behind the crime was not yet known. (PTI)

Thomas inaugurates FCI godown

New Delhi: Union Food Minister K V Thomas on Wednesday inaugurated a new FCI godown with a capacity to store 5,000 tonnes of foodgrains in Manipur. State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was also present at the inaugural ceremony. At present, Food Corporation of India (FCI) has five depots with a capacity to store 33,090 tonnes of foodgrains in the state. “Every revenue district in the state will have at least one FCI godown,” Thomas said in a statement. FCI, the central nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains, is effectively ensuring foodgrains meant for public distribution system reaches Manipur despite geographical and infrastructural bottlenecks, the statement said. The Corporation annually supplies 2.35 lakh tonnes of grains to the state to meet the demand of 4,06,593 PDS beneficiaries, it added. Thomas is on his tour to North East to review preparedness of seven states in this region to implement the ambitious national food security law. (PTI)

Arunachal organising ‘Vikas Rally’, Moily to attend

Itanagar: To highlight the programmes and achievements of the Arunachal Pradesh, a ‘Vikas Rally’ will be organsied by the state government on November 16 at Indira Gandhi Park here. Union Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily will participate in the event, besides a host of dignitaries including Union Minister of State for Finance J D Seelam, Union Minister of state for Tribal Affairs Ranee Narah, Union Minister of state for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering and a few MPs, official sources said here on Wednesday. The one-day event is being held to highlight the initiatives under PM’s special economic package, state government flagship programmes, besides other state and centrally sponsored programmes, the sources said. As part of the celebration, a documentary film on achievements and initiatives of the state government, colourful cultural displays representing various tribes of the state will also be exhibited on the occasion, sources added.
