SHILLONG: Irked by the lackadaisical attitude of the government in resolving the controversial issue of Umsawli under New Shillong Township (NST), the residents of Umsawli area staged another demonstration at Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah here on Wednesday.

The protest against the arrest of CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing and the eviction and demolition of houses at Umsawli area by MUDA, which entered its third day on Wednesday, witnessed a large number of residents of Umsawli area led by RTI activist Angela Rangad with placards and black cloth expressing their dissatisfaction over the forceful attitude of the State government.

The protesters stated that will continue with their agitations until the government pays heed to their grievances.

The protest started on Monday when the affected families of Umsawli area gathered at General’s point to voice out their grievances and challenged the government to book them if they were found to be illegal settlers of the area as MUDA had claimed, while adding that the people are insecure as a result of which, they will be forced to utilize their rights of protesting against the government’s tyrannical attitude.

They again gathered at Khyndai Lad on Tuesday coming out in large numbers to demand redressal of their grievances by the government.
