SHILLONG: The Megha-laya People’s Front (MPF), a conglomerate of Opposition parties in the State, has decided to seek the intervention of Governor Dr K K Paul in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the MPF that includes UDP, NPP and a few independent legislators held on Monday. The conglomerate took stock of the law and order situation in Khasi Hills that stemmed out of pro-ILP agitation and the militants related incidents in Garo Hills.
“Accordingly we decided to seek audience with Dr Paul to brief him about the current security scenario in the State,” said MPF spokesman and UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh here on Tuesday.
According to Lyngdoh, the primary duty of the Opposition was to meet the Governor to apprise him of the situation that was prevailing in both Khasi and Garo Hills.
“We are sure that whatever the Governor has been hearing is only one side of the story provided by the government agencies,” he added.
Reacting to a query, if the Opposition would demand the imposition of President’s Rule in the State, Lyngdoh said the Opposition does not want to be accused of taking political mileage out of the issue.
The Opposition also took a dig at the Government for not reaching out the agitating pressure groups to end the ongoing impasse over the demand for introduction ILP in the State.
The opposition leaders said the government should call a special session of the Assembly to discuss the proposed Tenancy Act.
